Let’s Grow

“Let’s Grow”

Hebrews 5:13 – 6:3 (AMP)

“For everyone who lives on milk is [doctrinally inexperienced and] unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he/she is a spiritual infant. But solid food is for the [spiritually] mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.

Therefore let us get past the elementary stage in the teachings about the Christ, advancing on to maturity and perfection and spiritual completeness, [doing this] without laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith towards God,

of teachings about washings (ritual purifications), the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. [These are all important matters in which you should have been proficient long ago].

And we will do this [that is, proceed to maturity], if God permits.”

I. Personal Development

  • • “…if you confess with your mouth the LORD Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved [from the punishment of sin; death]). (Romans 10:9, 10)

A. Put off your old self

“…regarding your previous way of life, put off, your old self [completely discard your former nature], which is being corrupted through deceitful desires, and be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh, untarnished mental and spiritual attitude], and put on the new self [the regenerated and renewed nature], created in God’s image, [godlike] in the righteousness and holiness of the truth [living in a way that expresses to God your gratitude for your salvation]. conduct, the old Ephesians 4:22 – 24 (The Amplified Bible)

“For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose]. Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—-because it pursues sin]; it the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God—-both now and forever]; the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God. However, you are not [living ] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he/she does not belong to Him [is not a child of God]. If Christ lives in you, though your [natural] body is dead because of sin, your spirit is alive because of righteousness [which He provides]. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8:5-11 (The Amplified Bible)

B. Recognize/Accept your status as a new creature/creation

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he/she is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. Now all things are of God, Who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ,

and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn of many brethren/children. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.” Romans 8:29, 30; (ref. St. John 17:22)

C. Renew your mind

“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pl Is easing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]. Romans 12:2, (ref. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5)

“Watch your thoughts, they become your words;

Watch your words, they become your actions;

Watch your actions, they become your habits;

Watch your habits, they become your character;

Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” – Anon

II. Resist Discussion of Elementary Principles (Heb. 6:1,2) (ref. 1 Tim. 1:3, 4)

A. Change your thought life – 2 Cor. 10:3-5; Phil. 4:8

B. Change your behavior – 1 Cor. 13:11

C. Change your environment – Matt. 5:13, 14, 2 Thessalonians 3:6 (ref. 2 Corinthians 6:17)

III. Grow in Grace/Progress Toward Maturity (Heb. 6:1; 2 Peter 3:18)
